Strain gauge measurements

Strain gauge measurement is used in the study of construction in the following aspects:

1.  Evaluation of durability parameters of construction (for instance in railway, automotive and machine industry)

What is measured during the test are strain values in the measurement points (where the strain gages are installed on the structure). In a lot of cases these measurement points are determined by numerical analysis, which indicates the most intense stress places for specific loads cases.

The stress at these points is determined based on measured strain values and knowledge of material constant - Youngs module.

This type of research allows to:

  • establish the safety and durability of studied objects,
  • validation of the results obtained by FEM analysis - stress of the design obtained by computer simulation should be verified by comparing with the values derived from experimental studies.

Analysis of the measurement data can be used to:

  • design modifications to enhance safety
  • design optimization - minimize weight while maintaining safety and reliability criteria
  • fatigue analysis of construction

2.  Determination of loads (forces, bending and torsion torque) of the structure in operational conditions.

The results of tests serve as an input information to determine the boundary conditions in numerical analysis (finite element method).
